What kind of books do teen boys really want?

13-year-old Max Leone gives us his opinion in Publishers Weekly, arguing that “[t]he reason we read so little in our free time is partially because of the literary choices available to teenagers these days.”

So what kind of books does Max think should be published?

All his points are worth a read (seriously, this is one entertaining guy), but my favorite is this:

Vampires, simply put, are awesome. However, today’s vampire stories are 100 pages of florid descriptions of romance and 100 pages of various people being emo. However much I mock the literature of yesteryear, it definitely had it right when it came to vampires. The vampire was always depicted as a menacing badass. That is the kind of book teenage boys want to read. Also good: books with videogame-style plots involving zombie attacks, alien attacks, robot attacks or any excuse to shoot something.

I always find it hard to do Reader’s Advisory with a teenage boy -especially if his parent is there because they try to force him to read something that is really not in their interests. When the parent isn’t there, it still can be rather difficult because the teen boy does not always give the best example of the books they’ve enjoyed- or even really know what they like or would be interested in. A lot of times, I try to base my recommendations on books that I have enjoyed which are geared towards boys or from what I have seen some teen boys reading again and again. I am glad though that some boys are unafraid to speak up about their literary tastes and that I can now make more recommendations off this article.

first of all you have girls reply to a ? like what do teenage boys want to read. i mean i have nothing wrong with that but face it teenage boys dont wanna read something that a girl says is good even if it is. they want to read about things that happen to them not romances about vampires. i mean they are cool in all but todays teenage boys wants to read about thing they can relate to like how they act when girls are around and things like that.
